This research project focuses on the evolution of society’s judgement on societal gender roles, where it forces us to adapt and maintain an expected yet unattainable image. This paper highlights the notions of women during the 1940s and 1950s and their representation in film. It examines how the femme fatale embodies the advancements of First Wave Feminism and foreshadows the activism seen in Second Wave Feminism post Wold War II. Using Orson Welles’s film, The Lady from Shanghai (1947), the project display’s Elsa Bannister’s character as the feminine power and representation of femme fatale through the male gaze.
